I recently sat down with Lisa to find out all about her cake business.

Here are some of the questions I asked her and what she had to say!

 

How long have you been designing and decorating cakes?

I DABBLED AT IT WHILE OUR CHILDREN WERE GROWING UP AND MADE ALL THEIR BIRTHDAY CAKES.  WHEN OUR OLDEST DAUGHTER WAS GETTING MARRIED, SHE WAS GAME TO LET ME MAKE HER CAKE SO I REALLY STARTED PRACTICING.

 

How did you learn to design and decorate cakes? 

MOSTLY SELF TAUGHT, BUT MY FAMILY GAVE ME A 3 DAY COURSE  WITH NICOLAUS LODGE (ONE OF THE FOOD NETWORK CAKE JUDGES AND SUGAR ARTIST) AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT.  I LEARNED A LOT AND IT BOOSTED MY CONFIDENCE.

 

What’s the history behind your wedding cake making business?

I STARTED MAKING CAKES FOR EVERY FAMILY AND FRIEND'S FUNCTION THAT I COULD AS MY GIFT, RESEARCHED HOW TO START A BUSINESS AND JUMPED IN WITH BOTH FEET.

 

How did you get involved in the wedding industry?

AFTER I DID OUR SECOND DAUGHTER'S WEDDING CAKE, THE WORD SEEMED TO SPREAD THAT I WAS MAKING WEDDING CAKES.  THE FACT THAT SEVERAL OF THE BRIDESMAIDS AT THE WEDDINGS I WAS DOING WERE EITHER ENGAGED OR ABOUT TO BE ALSO HELPED SPREAD THE WORD :)

 

Tell us why your cakes are amazing…what sets you apart from the others and why we should hire you as our ideal wedding cake maker?

OF COURSE I BAKE FROM SCRATCH USING QUALITY INGREDIENTS AND I THINK THAT I PUT MY HEART INTO MY CAKES.  ALSO, I BELIEVE THAT I AM AN APPROACHABLE PERSON.

 

Can you describe a little bit the different styles of wedding cakes you offer?

I DO EVERYTHING FROM WHIMSICAL TO FORMAL.  I LOVE, LOVE MEETING WITH A BRIDE, LISTENING TO HER VISION FOR HER DAY, GRABBING THE COLOR PENCILS, SKETCH PAD AND THE TWO OF US COMING UP WITH A CAKE THAT REFLECTS HER VISION.

 

What are the most well-loved cakes you make or sell?

AS FAR AS FLAVOR, MY ALMOND POUND CAKE IS THE #1 SELLER ALONG WITH SWISS MERINGUE BUTTER CREAM FILLINGS.  SWISS MERINGUE IS A LIGHT, SILKY, NOT OVERLY SWEET BUTTERCREAM THAT IS A WONDERFUL BASE TO ADD A HOST OF INGREDIENTS THAT AMP IT UP TO MAKE IT OUT OF THIS WORLD MEMORABLE.  SUCH AS RASPBERRIES, STRAWBERRIES, SNICKERS, PEANUT BUTTER CUPS, BAILEY'S, GODIVA CHOCOLATE LIQUER, ETC.

 

What shapes and styles are hot right now?

SIMPLE CLEAN LINES, CHIC

 

Tell us about the consultation process. What questions will the bride need to be prepared to answer?

HER STYLE, NUMBER OF GUESTS, ALSO HAVING A GROOM'S CAKE, HER VISION, ETC.

 

Will there be a cake tasting?

YES

 

What should a bride bring with her to the consultation?

ANY PICTURES OF CAKES SHE HAS SEEN THAT SHE LIKES.  THAT WAY I CAN GET A FEEL FOR HER STYLE.

How long does it take to make and decorate a wedding cake?

SEVERAL DAYS FROM START TO FINISH.

 

What’s The Most Challenging Cake That You’ve Done?

I GUESS IT WOULD BE A CARVED CAR CAKE.
